SHUDRKA HYDERABAD, a theatre group based out of Hyderabad, has been performing plays in Hindi, Bangla and Telugu since 2004. It wishes to play its part in honouring and developing the culture of people of India and intends to research, explore and develop new ways of working in theatre. It also desires to produce meaningful theatre without neglecting the entertainment element. The group is proud to continue its 19 + years of tradition of contributing to the culture of Hyderabad and to the enrichment of the national theatre community.

When it was established in 2004, Shudrka Hyderabad took upon itself a challenge to produce plays which offer a framework for exploring, confronting and expressing problems of essential importance to life in India. The emphasis was on using theatre as a means of renewing contacts with the lost Indian heritage. In the initial years Shudrka struggled to define itself and find a place within communities that did not express any particular desire to engage with theatre. Shudrka, with limited resources, travelled throughout undivided Andhra performing in rural communities, performing material specific to the communities and trying to bring theatre to the people using the folk form of theatre.

After a few years the group realized that focusing only on one form of theatre limits the development of the actors, and focusing on political-social issues limits the development of the theatre goers as well. Gradually, plays of different kinds were introduced into the group.

The mission of Shudrka Hyderabad is

  • to test and break the boundaries of dance, drama, puppetry, music, and text to experiment with form while staying accessible to audience;

  • to develop a physical, theatrical performance technique that draws from many performance traditions;

  • to re-imagine "classics" with a desire to make them relevant;

  • to reach out to young audiences by redefining theatre as an interdisciplinary art form;

  • to form and maintain theatre artists that are flexible and forward-thinking;

  • to pose difficult questions of our difficult times through performances.

The group has participated in numerous national theatre festivals. The group members have presented papers in International symposiums on theatre in University of Austria, have been selected in prestigious acting school like University of Kent and have also been part of internationally acclaimed workshops like Kaimera Workshop on Immersive Theatre.
